In the second installment of Insurance Business’ two-part series on agency independence, Dan Garzella, Founder and CEO of Darkhorse Insurance Brokers and Garzella Group, shares his perspective on two common challenges: technology and staffing.
Garzella explains that technology can quickly become more complicated once an agency works with multiple carriers. Each insurance company may use its own systems, and the agency then has to figure out how those systems connect to one central platform.
That process can involve a lot of trial and error.
Garzella notes that the right technology setup today may not be the right one tomorrow. Needs change as an agency grows. Systems have to evolve with the business.
Garzella also pointed out the importance of avoiding “shiny object syndrome.” New technology can be tempting, but just because it works for others doesn’t mean it will work just as well for you. The focus should stay on finding systems that can support the agency as it scales.
His perspective illustrates two realities of agency independence. One, that technology needs will continue to change as the agency grows, and two, building a strong team will also require looking beyond convention.
